The night is silent, and Ella Cooper's heart is even quieter. Having prepared early in the day, she had been looking forward to spending her seventh wedding anniversary with her husband James Anderson. Ella Cooper hoped they could get along better, their ice-breaking moment was tonight. However, to her dismay, her carefully planned celebration held no ground. As time ticked away, Ella Cooper sat in the living room, listening to the ticking of the clock, her expression slowly shifting from anticipation to disillusionment. She sat there quietly, day turning into night, yet her husband never came home.
Then a phone call came, "Hello, Ella? I am sorry for waking you up at this late hour."
"I haven't slept yet, William Carter. What's the matter at this late hour?" She thought, receiving a late-night call from William Carter must mean serious business.
"Ella, there's something you need to know. Please try not to get upset or agitated. Our newspaper has fully followed the police's anti-vice campaign, which took place tonight. During a routine investigation at a hotel, the police ran into two people…"
At this point, William Carter paused, not proceeding further.
Who did they run into?! Ella Cooper's mind went blank, but when reason prevailed, her delicate eyebrows furrowed deeply. "William Carter, just say what you need to! I…can bear it."
The other end of the phone was still silent, till William Carter sighed heavily after a long silence: "Ella, the police ran into James Anderson and your sister, Mia Wright, at the hotel. They were in the hotel room when the police arrived…”
"Mia?!" How could this be?! Mia Wright has been living overseas with their grandparents since university and never even came back for her own engagement or wedding. But that wasn't much of a surprise. She was, after all, an adopted daughter in the Cooper family. Mia never treated her as a sister, and Ella knew this. What Ella was at a loss to understand was when these two unrelated people got together. Compared to James Anderson cheating on her, what shocked her more was that his mistress turned out to be Mia Wright, who lived overseas. Over these seven years, Ella Cooper had been like a timid mouse, constantly on edge.
"Sister? You have the nerve to call me sister?" The clacking sound of her high heels reverberated, each step on the floor sounding so heavy. Ella Cooper stepped slowly towards Mia Wright and James Anderson. A self-mocking laugh escaped from her lips. One of them was her sister, the other was her legal husband. They were respectful to each other, treating each other like guests. She had thought of all the possibilities involving James Anderson. Like now, James Anderson was with someone else. Fierce anger filled Ella Cooper’s exquisite and charming face, her glaringly large eyes looked furiously at Mia Wright, as if she was trying to see through her. If her gaze were knives, Mia Wright would have been shot through the heart.
Mia Wright let out a derisive huff at Ella Cooper, raising an eyebrow. Her eyes were filled with the conceit of a victor. Tilting her body, one hand laid casually on James Anderson's chest, her palm caressing his chest. She turned to Ella Cooper and smiled triumphantly, "As you can see, James Anderson and I are together. Sister, aren't you surprised at my return?!"
