Chapter 1

‘Move away… makes way,' Dr. Brown shouted as he pushed the stretcher toward the ER together with his medic’s team. As he was about to enter the operation room, he turned and stopped Ryan, ‘wait here.’

Ryan quickly pulled on Dr. Brown's coat, ‘save her, no matter what it takes, save her. Please.’

Dr. Brown nodded and quickly walked into the operation room as Ryan sank on the pavement. Staring blankly as the ER door closed right in front of his eyes.

The night was cold, but the chill was nothing to him now. It was the thought of losing her forever. He cuddled himself hard. He began to tremble and his eyes turned red as he felt the sharp pain in his heart, as if a sharp blade was slicing him continuously. Slow but continuously.

‘Keep disobeying me and I will make you regret your entire life,’ Ryan shook his head heavily, but he can't stop hearing the echo of what his mother told him just a few days ago. He gritted his teeth while gripping his fist tightly trying to control his anger and sorrow. Could this really have something to do with his mother? How could his very own mother do this to his most loved woman? How could she… or maybe not his mother? But such a coincidence…

‘Ryan, what's happened?’ Joan Su hurried toward Ryan.

‘Yes, what has happened to Angel?’ asked John Su.

Ryan looked at his girlfriend’s parents, the feeling of guilt began to overwhelm him. He bent down his head as he could not bear to look at them in the eyes.

With a low voice, he said, ‘A truck just came out of nowhere and...’ Ryan took a heavy deep breath and fighting hard to stop his tear from rolling down. But the image of what happened a while ago flashed back in his mind, stopped him from finishing what he intended to say.

The pain in his heart had tripled.

‘No! No! This is not happening,’ weeping Joan as her husband put his arm over her.

Yes that was the cruel truth. Barely an hour ago Angelina Su was knocked down by a runaway truck. All that had happened right in front of Ryan, who was standing at the opposite street. And yet... nothing could have been done to prevent it. There was nothing he could have done to stop that. That truck just hit Angelina and drove off without stopping. Everything happened so fast that he couldn't even see the plate number or the face of the driver. And that made him felt so useless. He hated not able to do anything at that time.

‘Have the police came?’ asked John.

Ryan nodded, ‘but everything has to wait till Angel wakes up.’

He stood up and bowed to John, ‘I'm sorry. If only I ...’

‘Nonsense, why should you apologize? Look sonny, this is not your fault. It's a hit-and-run. Don't worry. The police will be able to track down the driver,’ said solemnly John.

He knew very well what Ryan trying to say but yet he chose to stop him. Whatever was the real reason behind this "accident" must not be known to his wife.

Angelina had known Ryan for a year and their relationship had gone from pure friendship to courtship and then that eventually would lead to their marriage. However, John, being a businessman who had seen so much good and evil of mankind, knew their relationship would never be fruitful as Ryan’s mother, whom had been well known to be a very powerful and dynamic woman in the business world, who had been famous for her tricks in getting things done her way, such a woman. He knew very well that someone like his daughter would never meet the eyes of Ryan’s mother.

‘Let's sit down and wait,’ he turned from Ryan and said to his wife, ‘our daughter is Angel. She is well-loved by God. She will pull through this.’

Joan looked at her husband, ‘yes, she is going to be fine.’
