I stood outside the bar that night, quiet and unmoving. A sticky wetness on my face down to my hand. A ringing in my ears. There was chaos, people screaming...some running. Still i stood. Seeing, hearing, but not registering what had happened. The police came. An officer stood over me asking my name and who the man was lying on the sidewalk next to me. Man on the sidewalk? Why am i wet? Why are my ears ringing? What happened? Jaylee! Jaylee will know whats going on. Where is he? My left hand is empty where his had just been. All i feel is the familiarity of the engagement ring that had been placed there only six months before. I am no longer still. My heart is racing. That sticky wetness, i now realize is blood, but whose and how did it get there? I slowly turn my head while reaching for Jayless hand only to keep reaching. There on the sidewalk next to me lay my entire world. The man i had loved since our freshman year of college. The man I was going so spend the rest of my life with. I can hear a woman screaming. I wish she would shut the hell up. I realize she is me. I am screaming. An officer has me. I am not sure if he is holding me up or holding me back. Im not sure of anything except Jaylee is dead. Shot. Bleeding out on the concrete. I need to get to him. I break free and throw myself to the ground. "Jaylee...please dont leave me." I grab his hand and brush his hair back so i can see his face. His eyes are open but not seeing. I am quickly scooped up by the officer and escorted to his patrol car. I will go to the station to make a statement. We drive away as they cover my sweet Jaylee in a white sheet.
It wasnt supposed to end this way. We were supposed to grow old and grey together. Me the succesful lawyer and he the equally succesful real estate agent. We were going to buy a house and start trying for a baby. I wanted two, he wanted five. Now he was gone. I would never see our dreams come true. I would never hear his voice again or kiss his beautiful lips. No more impromptu dance partys in our pj's. His life was over and therefore in a way, so was mine. Someone took him from me. But, who..and why? One damn thing was for sure... I wouldnt rest until i found out!
