Chapter 1

* Prologue *

* A man must choose between his biological mother and his fiancee, Whom will he choose? *

***

Joseph held unto the balcony rails, as his mom took a seat on one of the mahogany chairs.

Minutes passed by in silence as no word was spoken between them, until he decided to break it himself, by asking the singular question that has been on his mind all day. “ Why did you do that, mom? ”

It took Beatrice a while to answer his question though she had prepared all her answers beforehand, " She isn't good enough for you. "

It doesn't matter to him, how carefully she chose her words as her words were like timing bombs.

" How well do you know her to come to that conclusion? "

" I did a detailed research on her. Joseph, don't tell you are really planning to start a family with that girl from the streets? "

If only, she knew how much self control Joseph exercised to avoid losing his cool. She wouldn't have even thought of those words.

" Mom, I decided to give you and Dad another chance, not because you deserved it, but I wanted to be free from the bondage of unforgivingness. Yet, that certainly doesn't mean, I accept everything you guys say as fact. You both also don't own any rights to my life. "

" I am not trying to control you, I only want the best for you, Joseph! " Her voice rose by a few decibels as she spoke.

" How can you possibly know what's best for me, Mom, when you don't even know me? "

His words came out with so much power and truth, causing Beatrice to freeze on the spot not knowing what else to say.

What could she possibly say to refute his words, when they were the complete truth?

What else could she say when the bomb had been dropped?

What?

" Joseph, I am your mother. " She enunciated the word, Mother.

" Mother? " He stared at her with wonder. " Have you forgotten how you abandoned me as a little child? Have you forgotten all about it? How I cried and begged you to take me along with you? Don't tell me you've forgotten so soon how pushed me away like I was nothing but a piece of garbage? Have you forgotten all about that, Mom? So soon? "

" I... " She was suddenly overcome with stutters. What could she say? She couldn't deny how right he was.!

" Speechless? Mom, you need to understand that giving birth to a child doesn't automatically make you a mother, just like donating a sperm doesn't make one a father. "

" Still, the fact that I gave birth to you remains! I carried you for nine months, Joseph! I went through excruciating pains just to bring you into this world. "

Joseph looked up from the tiled floor and looked up at her. " What's your point? "

" I have got more right on you than anyone else! I gave birth to you, Joseph... And you gotta have to listen to me and me alone. " She had her arms crossed tightly on her chest.

" And what if I don't? " Perhaps, his answer surprised her as her confidence level dropped. But as always, she was able to get herself back on track.

" Then... You'll have to forget that you've got a mother. "

" You are hilarious, Mom. " Despite the tension, Joseph still found himself bursting into a hearty chuckle. " I always and will always have a Mom. She just might not be you. "

" You mean... '' Beatrice felt her chest leap on realizing that her worst fear was finally coming through. " It can't be, no it really can't be. " She shook her head frantically.

" Nanny Yvonne became my mother the day she came into my life. You also lost your absolute right on me that same day. "

" That's not possible. I am your biological mother! My blood runs through your veins. " It really seemed like Beatrice wasn't planning on going down without a fight.

" I know. " A breeze blew, reducing the tension in the room. " And that's the only reason I am here. " His words felt like a time bomb as Beatrice's heart sank right after that.

" You ---- " she had her hand pointed at him with eyes brimming with both pain and regret.

" You don't have to hold on tightly unto me, Mom. I know I am your first child. But I am grown up. I have a right to my own life and feelings. "

" Joseph, I won't accept that girl as your wife. "

" No one asked you to accept her anyways. She'll become my wife with or without your blessings, Mom. " He uttered bluntly, much to her amazement.

Staring wide eyed at him, she saw an emotion which she had never for once seen in his eyes before. " When did you become so ---- "

" Blunt? "

" What spell has that wretched good for nothing girl cast on you? "

" Don't you dare, Mom! Mira is my future wife and you've got no right to insult her! "

" And what if I do? " She took a provoking step towards him.

" Then... I'll just forget that you gave birth to me all together. "

" Josh... "

" And... I am dead serious. " He walked out but just before he got to the door he stared back at her. " You've been warned, Mom. Please don't do anything out of place or I'll call the cops. " That being said, he walked out on her leaving Beatrice completely devastated as the latter just couldn't believe what had just happened.

“ You'll pay for this, Miranda! ” Beatrice gritted her teeth in rage.
