Chapter 1

As Nicky ran through the streets of New York in the middle of the night, the feelings coursed through her mind. Even though there were street lights, all she could see around her was a dark cloud. When she looked back she could see the figures. The same figures making her life miserable. With the blur images she knew she was already far from them.

Her steps slowed down and finally she paused on the sidewalk of a busy intersection while waiting to cross. On the middle of the road she could see the basket clearly. This made her mind race. She wanted to move closer but a force greater than her was pulling her back.

Despite the physical and mental pain, Nicky didn’t want to repeat the mistake twice. This time the voice was clear, the voice calling for help. She took one step towards the basket but it seemed to be two steps backward. Then she heard a car horn startling her. She knew she had to save the little Angel real quick before something bad happens to her. If anything could happen to her again, she would never forgive herself.

That thought gave her the energy to hasten her steps though her legs were weak from all the running. As Nicky got closer to the baby the basket moved and between the two of them was a river without a bridge. She looked at the other side of the road and saw the car coming towards the baby. The horns were too much and she was almost going deaf.

  BAM

There was a loud bang as the car knocked her down. She opened her eyes and saw the person she has been avoiding. Even in the dark, she can’t forget her worst nightmare. She didn’t need the face before she could recall her but her body shape and posture said it all. In her arms, she had Angel with a smile which to Nicky it was more of a smirk.

Nicky tried to raise her hand but she couldn’t move it. Her body was numb but she could feel pain in her stomach. She opened her mouth to scream but instead woke up sweating. She looked beside her and Jayce was there sleeping peacefully.

She stretched her hand and switched on the bedside lamp staring at the handsome face. Nicky wanted to wake him up but Jayce has gone through enough because of her and this was just one of her nightmares. She wiped away the sweat using the back of her palm and wanted to get a glass of water but felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen.

The pain seemed similar to what she felt during the nightmare. She was scared and the only thing that ran in her mind was her baby. She was feeling this emptiness that she couldn’t explain. The same emptiness she has been feeling this being the fourth time.

She couldn’t believe she has lost her baby again. The doctor said this baby might survive since the pregnancy is four months. The past three pregnancies she has been losing during her second month.

‘Ouch,’ she cried as the pain got unbearable. The noise woke her husband up.

‘Baby, are you okay?’ he asked in his caring voice.

‘My stomach, the baby,’ she said whimpering.

‘Just come down, I’ll take you to the hospital immediately,’ he said getting down.

The more he heard the whimpers of his wife the more he sped the car. His wife’s tears broke his heart. He didn’t want to imagine she lost the baby even though it was evident. There were bloodstains on her cloth and some had formed rows down her legs, which only happens when she’s having a miscarriage.

In his heart, he kept on praying that the baby is safe. He was trying his best to be calm and strong for her. He loved her and will always do. He had already bragged to his friends that soon he was going to be a father after three years of marriage.

He stopped the car and without packing it he ran inside the hospital calling the nurses. The nurses drove her inside the ward and restricted him from going inside. After twenty minutes which seemed like a whole year to him, the doctor came out.

‘Tell me they are okay,’ he pleaded with the doctor.

‘Can you please follow me to the office?’ the doctor said more of a question to him.

‘Just say it, how are they?’ he yelled.

The more the doctor delayed the more his blood boiled and the more he grew frustrated.

‘Come down, your wife is okay but she lost the baby,’ the doctor said calmly.

Jayce felt someone stab his heart. His legs grew weak and his eyes blurry. He used the wall for support and sat on the bench. He wanted to cry but he couldn’t because he is a man and a prominent one at that. His dad’s words are stuck in his mind, ‘A man should be strong and not always cry in public.’

The thought of how he was going to face his dad and friends made him want to disappear. Who had he wronged to deserve this? He needed an explanation and only one person could give him that. He stood up and rushed to her room.

To calm himself down he stood at the door and watched her always beautiful face. He walked inside the room and sat beside her.

‘I’m sorry, I couldn’t protect her,’ Nicky said in tears.

‘What happened?’ he asked taking her hand.

‘The woman took her. I tried stopping her but I couldn’t there was a river between us and I got hit by a car. I couldn’t move my body,’ she explained.

‘You couldn’t cry for help?’ he asked.

‘I tried but I couldn’t find my voice,’ she said.

‘Then your trial isn’t enough, the baby is no more,’ he said desperately standing up angrily.

‘I tried honey but my hands were tied,’ she pleaded but he walked out angrily.

His hands were itchy and he needed to hit something to deal with his anger.

Nicky laid on the bed letting the tears flow. She was regretting and to her she was the worst mother. Everything was confusing to her but with the pain she was filling she didn’t want to lose another child. She had so many unanswered questions. Who was that woman and why does she always take her babies? How was she even going to find her yet her face is always blurry?

Like every woman she had the desire to hold her baby, see the baby grow, take the baby to school but that woman is destined to destroy her life and her marriage. When she lost her first baby things didn’t change as Jay assured her that they’ll make another baby. When she lost the second baby Jay took her to different hospitals to see what the problem was but she was okay. During her third miscarriage his aunt came and insulted her. Ever since that day things changed from bad to worst and the only thing that kept the marriage were the vows and not love.

She was first scared when she realized she was pregnant but her hopes were raised since it was four months. Jay was happy and treated her as a queen. Due to the pregnancy she resigned from work to reduce stress and only take care of herself. With all this in her mind she couldn’t help but feel more pain. She felt the need to talk to someone and her only friend would do. She looked around and realized that she didn’t come with her phone. She sighed and adjusted on the bed.

The door opened and the nurse came in with a tray of food.

‘How are you feeling?’ the nurse asked placing the tray before her.

‘I’m fine thanks,’ she said wiping away the tears.

‘Don’t cry one day you’ll be blessed with a child that will stay,’ the nurse said calmly.

‘Do you have kids,’ Nicky asked before she could stop herself.

‘Yes, I have a daughter,’ the nurse said and smiled at the thought of her precious daughter.

‘How did you protect her?’ she asked.

‘All mothers are protectors, I know you tried, it wasn’t your fault. Eat something I’ll be bringing your drugs,’ the nurse said.

She really pitied Nicky, this is the second time she has seen her here with the same problem. She felt her pains and promised herself to pass through the church and pray for her. In her life Paula had seen God do and Nicky really needed prayers.

‘Can we go to the church?’ the nurse decided to ask.

‘Once I leave this place I’ll accompany you,’ Nicky said.

She was desperate and can do anything to have a child, just one, to save her marriage.

‘Have you ever been to church? Do you know God can answer your prayers?’ Paula asked.

‘When I was young my grandma used to take me to church but when I went to my mom everything changed,’ Nicky said painfully.
