Chapter 1

"Take a look, if there's no issue, sign it."

What was placed in front of Rebecca was a divorce agreement.

She looked at the extraordinarily handsome man before her, and the pain in her heart surged like endless waves. Absent for three years, upon her return to the nation, she was suddenly faced with this anticipated outcome.

Married for three years, he had sent her abroad to study extensively, only to spend his days in a two-people world with first love.

Now that first love wanted an acknowledged position, he simply proposed divorce upfront.

Seeing her somewhat daze, Edward sternly added, "Don’t worry. After the divorce, I will still follow up on your mother's subsequent treatment."

Thinking of her mother's illness, Rebecca felt even more bitter in her heart.

Would she have accepted this marriage three years ago if not for her mother's illness?

Under the dim light, she cast her eyes down, like a lonely little creature.

Edward's heart suddenly softened.

In a rare instance, he explained in a low voice: "Lisa's time is running out, and she hopes to have a wedding."

Rebecca tugged at the corner of her lips and whispered, "I understand."

For Lisa, it seems that there is nothing he can't give up.

Taking a deep breath, she picked up the document on the table and began to read carefully. The conditions were very favorable, and he had even left two houses for her.

After all, since childhood, they have grown up together, aside from the matters of feelings and marriage, he has never treated her unfairly.

As she was reading the document, Edward was calmly observing her. Compared to three years ago, she had become thinner, and more silent.

He fiddled with the tie around his neck, the feeling of irritation growing within him.

"I agree." Rebecca lifted her head, looking at him.

A faint smile played across her fair and delicate face, as though she had been well-prepared from the start.

A surge of discomfort intensified within Edward as his fingers suddenly paused.

"Do you have a pen?" Rebecca asked softly, trying to conceal her emotions from him.

After all, it's not a pleasant sight.

"Eh?" Edward seemed to not have heard clearly.

"I need to sign but I didn't bring a pen." Rebecca kept up her light smile.

Edward's dark eyes stared at her for a while, then he reached into his drawer, pulled out a pen and handed it to her.

"Thank you." She took the pen, polite yet distant. Her pen smoothly ran across the paper, leaving her name quickly under the agreement, without any hesitation.

"I'm finished," she handed back the pen.

But Edward did not take it.

His gaze fell heavy on the name beneath the agreement, his lips lightly pressed together, a complex mood apparent in his dark eyes.

"Mr. Lewis?"

Edward snapped back to reality, took the pen, and picked up the document.

Just as he was about to sign, he paused.

Looking up at her, he asked, "Do you have any other requests? I'll try my best to accommodate you."

"No, I already owe you a lot. The medical expenses you fronted for my mother, I'll find a way to pay you back," Rebecca softly replied.

Edward felt an inexplicable squeeze in his heart, even accompanied by an unfamiliar discomfort.

Irritated, he tossed the pen aside and pushed the agreement to the side.

"You don't need to repay, she is my mother-in-law too," he said.

Rebecca's eyes slightly moved as she looked at the agreement discarded by him, and a ridiculous thought popped into her mind.

Was he... unwilling to get a divorce too?

However, in the next moment, the man’s cold voice rang out, "Tomorrow, are you available to meet Lisa? She wants to have a face-to-face talk with you."

"..."

Rebecca lightly nodded: "Okay."

"If she asks you if you have someone you love, lie to her. Let her be at ease," he said.

Rebecca's heart ached a little; where does she need to lie?

Her feelings were simply too hard to speak of.

With a slight lift at the corners of her lips, she obediently replied, "Okay."

"Ensure that you live well in the future, so that she doesn't have any mental burdens!"

"Okay."

"You have to..." Edward became speechless.

It was obvious, he was bearing a look of impatience between his eyebrows.

Rebecca looked at him, slightly confused. She had been behaving so obediently, wasn't he satisfied yet?

"Forget it." Edward pinched his brows and said quietly, "That's all."

Rebecca didn't dare to ask further. Nodding, she said, "If there's nothing else, I'll head back to my mum's side first." They were going to divorce, naturally she wouldn't spend the night here, to avoid any misunderstandings from Lisa.

"Wait." Edward said, "You should live here. This house is left for you."

Rebecca was slightly taken aback, then she smiled, "Sister Lisa might be unhappy when she finds out."

This apartment is in downtown, it's a beachfront house and is probably worth tens of millions.

Is he generously giving this to her?

Upon hearing "Sister Lisa", a flicker of tiredness passed through Edward's eyes.

He collected his emotions, resuming his prior noble and reserved demeanor, and said quietly, "Go take a shower, rest early."

Rebecca pursed her lips, without any further objections to avoid his anger. And she, after a strenuous day of traveling, was indeed quite exhausted.

She stood up and obediently said, "Alright."

With that, she was about to head towards the secondary bedroom.

Edward called after her, "The plumbing in the secondary bedroom is broken, go to the master bedroom."

Rebecca looked up, surprise emerging in her lovely eyes.

Master bedroom?

That was his bedroom...

Rebecca couldn't help but feel her heart pounding a bit faster. However, upon seeing Edward's indifferent expression, she couldn't help but ridicule herself.

What was she thinking? Always reading more into things.

His heart only had room for Lisa, how had he ever cared a bit for anyone else?

Rebecca went upstairs, constantly reminding herself to stay rational the entire way. It wasn't until she felt emotionally stable that she opened the door of the master bedroom.

Seeing the simple and stylish decor, she felt a sense of tension, as if she was stepping into forbidden territory.

Actually, this was her second time entering this room.

On the night of her wedding with Edward, they spent the whole night alone in this room.

He slept on the sofa while she slept on the bed.

Even as the most intimate of couples, they maintained the greatest distance.

Stepping into the bedroom, she began to undress.

However, she couldn't help but remember the words her mother, currently ill in the hospital, had told her earlier that day.

"He's probably going to propose a divorce this time you return. All he ever cares about is his 'Moonlight,' never sparing a thought as to whether it would hurt you or not."

Edward didn't consider her feelings, and Rebecca didn't care at all.

After all, she knew very well that this marriage was nothing more than a short-term cooperation and transaction.

Three years ago, when her father committed suicide and her mother fell gravely ill, when she was at her most helpless, he appeared before her...

"Do you know how to adjust the hot water?"

The cold voice tolling behind her gave Rebecca a sudden scare.

She reflexively turned around, but her hands trembled, causing all the clothes she was holding to fall to the ground, exposing her body, smooth as jade.

The two locked eyes.

The air between them was thick with embarrassment.

In the next second, Rebecca, clutching her chest, let out a scream.

"Ah—!"
