“No, no, no!” She cried out, bending over to savage the little she could, but every attempt seemed fruitless because the food kept soaking into the wet ground. Unfortunately, it had rained that morning. This made her furious. With frantic wide eyes and a rage-fueled strength, she grabbed the nearest huge stone she could carry and ran like a wild beast, screaming at the top of her lungs after the car that had deprived her siblings’ food.

Chapter 1

*splash*

The puddle flew, dropping its scented contents on her. She had jumped out of the road to avoid the speeding car from running her over, yet, the fate she met was comparable.

The contents of her bags went flying in different directions, while she crashed to the ground.

“Oh God, no!!” She wailed, staring at the food that would have lasted her siblings and her two days, scattered all over.

“What to do, what to do?” She kept muttering to herself as she stood up, her soaked clothes, a far cry from her current predicament. She was exhausted from all the work she’d done to pay for the now perished food.

The thoughts of her siblings, sitting hungry at their shack, desperately waiting for her return brought her to tears. They’d had nothing to eat since the night before and it was 12noon already.

The car had been slowed down by traffic.

She flung aimlessly but with all her might. Luckily, she didn’t miss her target. The stone leaped gracefully into the air, and as if in slow motion, landed successfully, producing a satisfying crunch as It collided with the rear glass of the car.

“Yeah!” She screamed triumphantly, panting profusely.

She was fed up with being trampled by the so-called ‘high social class’. She did housekeeping jobs for the high and mighty to feed, pay rent, and school fees for her three younger siblings. They treated her like trash and never failed to remind her of her place down the food chain, or, in this case, way down in the dirty puddle.

She took rapid deep breaths as she awaited the repercussions of her actions.

Two guys stepped down, more like busted out from the damaged car, both looking murderous as their eyes shone like lasers in different directions. When they sited her stance, they knew instantly that she was the one and began stomping towards her.

She bent over and picked another stone, securing it behind her back.

By now, a small group was gathering, sensing the brewing tension.

The first guy that reached her, splurged his arm, aiming at her face.

She dodged his hand, then swung her own arm with the stone in hand straight to his nose.

Another crunch sound was made.

Gasps could be heard from the small crowd as blood gushed out from the cracked nose.

Realizing what she’d done, She immediately took off, running for her dear life.

“Call the cops!” The other guy screamed at his friend, handing him a handkerchief before sprinting after her.

“You’re not getting away from me,” he muttered angrily.

Her soaked clothes were flapping against her legs, impeding her run. She had to rip it apart to free her legs and continued her mad dash.

She turned a corner that led to the marketplace and began leaping over tables, dodging planks and shades, with the guy still in hot pursuit.

She pushed down empty baskets and tables to slow him but the athletic guy jumped over them effortlessly, gaining in on her.

She was losing her strength the longer she ran. The adrenaline rush was fading, plus the fact that she was starved and exhausted.

Her heart had begun thumping really loudly against her ribs, her breathing coming in choking gasps. Every step was getting extremely difficult. Her eyes were blurring out, making it hard for her to see clearly. Well, this resulted in her pushing and running into people who cursed at her angrily.

She slowed down, then began flaring her arms to get a hold of something. When all she could touch was thin air, she screeched to a stop. Any more and she would’ve passed out.

She whirled around just as the guy was about to reach her. With eyes clamped shut, she braced herself for the worst.

He was running too fast that he couldn’t stop on time when she did.

“Oh shoot!” escaped his mouth before he crashed into her. Instinctively, his arms sprang out and encircled her before they crashed to the floor, the force of the collision rolling them on the dirty market floor.
