Chapter 1

"Ms. Candice, the makeup is done, and again, congratulations on your marriage." The makeup artist put away her brushes and congratulated the beautiful woman in front of the mirror.

Candice looked at herself in the mirror with satisfaction, her makeup was light, but it completely reflected her beauty. She lifted the corners of her mouth in a satisfied smile, then turned her head to the makeup artist at her side and said sincerely, "Thank you. I love it."

The makeup artist was surprised for a moment by her beautiful smile and didn't know how to respond, stammering, "No.... It's... It's that you look beautiful."

Candice smiles and turns to the maid behind her and asks, "Where's Lucien?"

Lucien was her fiancé, the groom of the day, but now that the wedding was about to begin, he hadn't shown up yet.

Before the maid could answer, the door to the dressing room opened. A tall man walked in, dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, which did nothing to hide his stockiness.

"Lucien, you're finally here, go..." Candice happily ordered the wardrobe to change him into the tuxedo she had personally picked out, but the man interrupted her, "Get out, all of you."

His voice was so loud that everyone in the dressing room was stunned, there was no time, the ceremony was about to begin, but it was as if the groom had no intention of changing his tuxedo.

Lucien took a deep breath and commanded, "Out, all of you!" when he saw that no one in the room was moving.

Almost the next second, the only person left in the room was a confused Candice.

Candice reluctantly stood up, looked at Lucien and said, "Lucien, something has to wait until the wedding is over...", ignoring the weight of the wedding dress on her body.

Pah-

Lucien throws the papers in his hand at Candice, she moves her head to avoid the papers hitting her face, she looks at Lucien incredulously.

Lucien then says coldly, "This is evidence, what else do you want to argue about?"

Candice didn't look at the papers on the floor, she knew Lucien was referring to the farce two months ago. That day, Lucien had been drugged by someone else, Candice had saved him and spent the night with him in a hotel. But the next day, they had just left the hotel when a reporter crouched at the door and their gossip immediately spread all over the Internet.

It's not really gossip, they were already engaged earily.

But Lucien was very unhappy about it, and he decided that it was Candice's way of getting married as soon as possible. No matter how she explained it, he didn't believe it.

Candice squeezed her wedding dress tightly in her hands and said in a trembling voice, "It really wasn't me, why don't you believe me?"

Lucien didn't feel the slightest pity for the woman in front of him, he only felt that she was acting, took out the plane ticket he had prepared long ago and said coldly, "Three o'clock, go to the United States. Get out of my sight and I'll pretend this never happened."

Candice looks at the plane ticket with her name on it and asks with a mocking smile, "You're hoping I'll be out of your dear Leila's sight, aren't you?"

There could only be one reason for him to send her away in such a hurry, and that was Leila, who had a heart condition. She always had attacks at critical moments, like their engagement, and then today.

Lucien's lack of answer or denial was tantamount to acquiescence, and Candice's eyes immediately reddened and her body trembled uncontrollably.

She always knew that Lucien didn't love her, but she didn't care, she had loved this man for ten years and she always thought that she could do whatever she had to do to make him accept her. Until this second, she'd been under illusions.

Candice staggered over to Lucien, took his side and said, "Lucien, let's call a truce. I..."

She was going to tell Lucien that she was pregnant.

But before she could finish her sentence, Lucien shook her off and ordered towards the door, "Jonas, come in and take her away.

Soon the door to the locker room opened again and all the staff was gone, only Lucien's men were outside and she knew that even if it was a kidnapping today, he would find a way to take her away.

Lucien didn't give her a chance either, he turned and left without looking back.

That's what she got for holding out for ten years, Candice laughed mockingly and her grip on her wedding dress loosened.

She should have given up a long time ago...

5 Years Later

"Dr. Candice, emergency room calling you.." The nurse pushed open the door to Candice's office room again.

"OK." Responding to the nurse, Candice explained some precautions to the patient in front of her and went over with nurse.

When she was almost over to the operating room, Candice's steps instantly slowed as she looked at the well-built, spirited man in the crowd.

Her eyes, which were exposed outside the mask, then also went cold, without any semblance of warmth.

With just a quick glance, she recognized him, Lucien.

How sudden such an encounter was after not seeing her for five years, so sudden that Lucien couldn't help but sink his brow as well when he saw her.

A few moments later, when Candice drifted back to her gaze, Lucien had also returned to his usual indifference and walked toward her.

Standing in front of her, he raised his right hand and removed her mask.

The familiar face revealed to him, Lucien casually tossed the mask into a nearby trash can and gently ordered, "Get in there and save her."

After a few years of not seeing her, he still had this full-of-care, superior, all-commanding attitude toward her.

"Dr. Candice." At that moment, the assistant handed over the chart.

Candice laughed sarcastically when she took the chart and read it.

Leila! It's her again.

With a look of indifference on her face, Candice suddenly remembered the night of her baby's death.

That night when the thunderstorm met, she was alone in a foreign country with no one to rely on. She dialed the international number with her last expectation, but when Lucien heard her voice, he immediately hung up without saying a word.

The past swarmed over Candice and her heart was torn hard. Her right hand holding the chart couldn't help but tremble as well.

Turning her head and handing the chart back to the assistant, she said coldly, "She's not my patient."

She returned to the country after many years and treated patients who were booked in advance. She didn't have time to treat people outside of her schedule.

Lucien's eyebrows sank when he hear her excuse, and he raised his hand to pinch her face and ask, "How much?"

Before seeing Candice, Lucien had never imagined that the doctor who was the most prestigious professor of cardiac surgery at such a young age, the one who could treat Leila with certainty and could give her a new heart, would be Candice.

Candice swept a glance over to the operating room and said without moving, "Aren't you afraid I'll kill her while I'm at it?"

Lucien should know more about their feud than anyone else.

Releasing Candice's face, Lucien straightened her white robe and glanced at the operating room as well, "If she dies, then you don't get to live."

Candice gasped at Lucien's threat and said defiantly, "If I die, even more no one will be able to do her surgery."

The argument between the two, the dean and a few other doctors looked puzzled, and hastened to persuade from it, "Mr. Lucien, Miss Leila is in no great danger. She can go ahead without surgery today."

"When we find a suitable heart source, we will be meeting to discuss the specifics of the surgery and the attending physician."

Candice turns her head to look at him, following up with a cold face as she removes Lucien's hand and turns away, walking away without looking back, just as he did before.

Lucien's appearance completely disrupts Candice's mood, and she can't concentrate on organizing her materials, so she has to give up packing and prepare to leave work early.

It was just after nine in the evening when she came out of the consulting room and looked up to see Lucien with both hands in his pants pockets.

Candice removed her medical gloves and said with a grimace, "You don't have to come to me, I won't be taking Leila's case."

Lucien ignored her words and stepped closer, removing her mask once more and cupping her chin not so gently.

Lucien look down at Candice, and scrutinized very carefully. It was as if he hadn't been the one who had argued with her.

Finally, he said with a soft chuckle, "You're a lot braver for becoming a doctor."

Candice disgustedly took and pulled his hand away, "When are we getting a divorce?"
