Chapter 1

Andrew walked through the crowded bar expertly holding two glasses of martini. He spotted his table and gently put down the glasses on it.

“Thanks, I needed that,” Katie mumbled to her friend as she picked up one of the glasses.

“If you are drunk enough, shall we leave? I don’t think Valerie would be arriving anytime soon?” Andrew said checking his watch.

Katie had just broken up with her boyfriend of two years. What she had presumed to be a perfect relationship turned sour over the last few months. Finally, she could not take those petty fights anymore and decided to quit it. It felt awful. She missed all the little things that came with a relationship like spending time together, waking up with him at times, cooking for each other, the typical mushy things not to mention the wild passionate sex.

After a week of depression, she had decided that she needed to get over it. And what else could be more perfect than spending time with her friends? So, she called her roommate, Valerie and their common friend Andrew to join her at the bar. Andrew had also broken up with them recently and she knew he was hurt. He had agreed, Afterall that is what friends do, help each other out. So, here they were, drowning their sorrows in alcohol.

He leant down to Katie and whispered over the noise, “would you like to dance?”

Her brown eyes widened for a second, Andrew was quite attractive, he was lean and tall, with sandy hair and a face which most girls would consider handsome. Though she had never looked at him in “that” way.

“Sure, let do it,” Katie answered and finished her drink in one swig.

Soon Andrew was dancing drunkenly, pressing himself against Katie, who was gyrating against him. She was equally drunk and that they would probably wake up with bad hangovers tomorrow, but he was feeling so good right now that he did not care. Suddenly Katie turned towards him and whispered. “Let’s hook up!”

He froze and stopped dancing, “WHAT!”

“Shhh, you don’t have to shout, see I am hurt and in need of some good sex, we are friends, we have known each other for a long time, we can fill each other’s needs at least for now? what say?”

He looked dumbfounded, how was he supposed to react when one of his best friends and an attractive one asked for such a favour? he pulled her aside from the crowd into a corner.

"Katie, I don’t think we should start a relationship, so soon after….”

“It’s not a relationship. This is just a nice, friendly ... fling .... Something to cheer us up?” She spoke.

He looked unsure.

"I promise this means nothing; I won't come running to you for anything extra. I’m supposed to be getting over a relationship here, and what better way to do it than to go to bed with a sexy guy?" She said with a wink.

“You know, I just may be able to help you out there," He grinned, as he felt himself swell. Heck, why not? Katie was an incredibly attractive woman, and he was too drunk to refuse the offer anyway.

“Your place or mine?” He asked with a sly smile. They left the club forgetting all about the third friend who was supposed to arrive.

Andrew and Katie walked into her apartment’s elevator, and he immediately started kissing her passionately, pressing her against the corner wall. She responded with equal passion, her hands running through his hair as she pulled his face closer. When the elevator reached his floor, they practically ran to her apartment, fumbled for a moment before opening the lock and slammed the door behind. They made their way to her bedroom, leaving a trail of clothes behind them. Katie got onto the bed and lay down, beckoning to him. Andrew wasted no time in joining her.

When he was spent, he rolled off her and lay down beside her, breathing heavily.

"I needed that," she said, breathing hard.

"Me too." He replied, staring at the ceiling.

"I wonder what Valerie would think about this?” he asked, turning on his side and propping his head on his elbow.

"We're just great friends hooking up nothing else." She replied.

"She might think of us as a couple," Gavin pointed out.

"She is sensible I am sure she would understand, Damm it!” Katie suddenly sat up and started searching for her clothes.

“Wait what happened?” Andrew asked, puzzled by her action.

“We were supposed to meet Valerie at the bar! we stood her up! she might be returning anytime.” Katie replied pulling on her tee. Andrew groaned and pulled on his pants then they are searching for their phones. Realizing that it was in the living room they walked towards it.

Valerie sighed and stretched her legs under the table, feeling her muscles protest as she stretched her legs. Stifling a yawn, she looked at her watch. It was 9 p.m., she had to meet her friends at the bar. Once she was done packing away her work, she picked up her handbag and made her way onto the street. It had been a tiring day, and a drink would be welcome.

After spending ½ an hour at the bar while her friends did not even bother to return her calls, she decided to leave. Reaching her apartment, she let herself in, only to find Andrew and Katie in the living room half-dressed, frantically collecting their clothes. It did not take her long to understand what had happened. They stopped when she entered, a guilty look adorned their faces.

"What’s going on?” She asked looking at both.

When neither of them spoke, she continued, “you do not have to stop, please continue. "Pretend like I don’t exist when you stood me up at the bar.” She said folding her arms.

“Umm sorry Valerie, things just happened. We did not mean to leave you out.” Katie tried to explain.

“What do you mean to leave me out? I am not interested in a threesome with you guys!” Valerie replied disapprovingly.

Andrew snorted. “You know what we mean, I am sorry for standing you up.”

“That’s fine,” Valerie smiled and waved her hand. “So, when did you start seeing each other? What else have you been up to behind my back?” she reprimanded her best friends.

“We are not in a relationship. This is just, a friendly hook-up.” Andrew fumbled quickly.

Valerie raised an eyebrow.

“We are too alike to be in a relationship, it won't work out. It’s just….”

“Hold on,” Valerie interrupted her friends. “You don’t need to explain…..whatever …. thing you are having.” Smiling for the first time since she had come in. "You guys go enjoy yourselves. I had a tiring day and I need my beauty sleep."

Katie just nodded.

"Hey guys," Valerie said, before going to her bedroom. “I am not upset; I just don’t want you to mess things up and break our friendship.”

Andrew’s eyes softened at her concern.

“That will never happen, we are matured, adults. Good night dear.” He smiled at Valerie.

Valerie sighed and closed the door behind her, leaning on it. It had hurt, watching the man she had loved for a long time hooking up with her best friend. She wiped off a silent tear and collapsed on her bed. What a crappy day!
