Chapter 1

ZACHARY

"Mr Evan's office,Hold please!"

The tip of my pen pressed against the paper of important documents, the black ink leaving it's mark across the page.

"Mr Evan's office,Hold please!"

I paused, lifting my pen from the paper until I heard quietness. But just as the tip of my pen touched off the page once again...

"I'm sorry. Mr Evan's isn't in the office today. Can I take a message?"

This is hopeless!! I released a sigh of exasperation,as I rested back in my Eames Executive Chair of upholstered leather. If I can't work, then what the fuck am I doing here?

It's been 6 months..

6 months since she left that note on the bedside cabinet. She walked out of my life because I didn't believe her when she needed me to. How could I have been so stupid? Kate ment more to me than anyone else. I should have listened to her. If I did,I could have protected her so she didn't have to run again.

Like I said it's been 6 months,6 months of me not being able to concentrate on anything but her. Work is impossible, sleep is impossible,LIFE IS IMPOSSIBLE!! I wanted to find her-I needed to for my own sanity.

I've been putting my money to use trying to find her, paying who I could to see if I could track her down. She doesn't want to be found, but I can't move on with my life until I see her again.

I stood from my chair and walked towards the tall windows of my office. I looked down at the bustling city below me,watching people going about their day without a care in the world.

Where is she-Where are you Kate?

A knock came to the door of my office and then it opened and shut. I didn't turn around,I continued looking out the window."I know you didn't want to be disturbed, but I have some messages here for you."

"You can leave them on my desk."I replied, hoping that Michelle would leave it at that and go. Sometimes I find it hard that she was a friend of Kate's.

Michelle knows of everything that went on between Kate and I,it makes things complicated when it comes to work. Sometimes it's hard to keep her out of my business.

"Are you okay?"She asked.

"I'm fine.."I turned around and grabbed my jacket from my chair."I'm going to leave for the day, call me if there's a problem."

"Okay but.."Michelle stopped me as I was about to leave."You have that lunch with your Grandmother at 2pm. You asked me to remind you."

Shit-The Lunch.

I sighed."I forgot about that." Cancelling on my Grandmother had crossed my mind, despite the fact that I knew that I couldn't get away with it.

I've done it twice already.

I was sitting down to lunch with my Grandmother,at a fancy restaurant of her choosing. She's always been one of those woman who liked the finer things in life,so dinning at the finest restaurant in LA was a must for her.

My Grandmother handed the waiter the menu and he walked away."It's good to see you,Zachary. It's been a couple of weeks,I was starting to worry about you."

"Sorry,I've just been busy at the office." I gave her a weak smile. I knew that she would bring it up,My Grandmother was used to seeing me once or twice a week usually. But it's been weeks.

"You're not still pining after that girl, Are you?"She picked up her tall glass of ice tea."It's been months,Darling. You need to move past this. Blake has been asking about you."

I sighed,in frustration."Kate wasn't just some girl and you know it."In my Grandmother's eyes,Kate skipped town because she had cold feet about us.And perhaps maybe she just wasn't the type of girl to settle.

"I'm sorry,Zachary. I know that you had hoped that she would have come back by now."My Grandmother extended her hand across the table and placed it on top of mine."Perhaps it's time to move on!"

Move on-If only it were that simple!

How could I even contemplate dating another woman when all I can think about is Kate. I loved her-That doesn't just go away.

"You mentioned on the phone that there was something that you wanted to discuss?"I was changing the subject and trying to get the lunch over with as quick as possible so I could leave. I wasn't in the humor and I didn't want to upset her.

"Yes,There is!"My grandmother set her glass down on the table and sat quietly a moment. It was as though she was preparing a grand speech in her head ,which wasn't usually like her.

Something is wrong!"What's going on? I can tell that something is up!

Her frail fingers trembled on the table. "I've been borrowing from Mr Bradley since your Father died, just to keep the house and business afloat."

"Borrowing.."I sighed."You know that I have money, why didn't you just come to me if you were struggling? I thought the company was okay financially."

"I didn't want to worry you,Darling.I had hoped I could handle it alone. The plan was that the loan would keep the bank off our backs until I figured things out..But"My Grandmother paused mid sentence."Now he wants all of it back."

I rested back in my chair, shaking my head in annoyance."I can't believe this. How much?"I asked, not expecting the figure that she gave me.

I have money-Just not that much. I lead a comfortable lifestyle, nice house, nice car, my own private yacht but that didn't mean that I had the amount that we needed.

"I'm sorry,Darling."Our meal came to the table and my Grandmother sat up straighter. When the waiter left she looked me in the eye again."I had hoped that pushing you and Blake together would sweeten him,but things didn't work out there.

"No-They didn't!"I can't believe that's why she was pushing me into a relationship with Blake all this time.

"The company-How bad is this for the company?"

She dabbed her eyes with her little white handkerchief."If we don't find the money to pay Mr Bradley back,The company won't last another 6 months."

Another 6 months,I knew that business was bad I just didn't think that it was that bad. My Grandmother always handled the financial side of the business when my Father was alive,so when he passed she continued to do so.

Of course i would have liked to have a handle on that myself, but she had just lost her son. Taking care of the business was a normal in her life and it's what was keeping her going. At least that's what I thought. I had no idea that she was struggling.

My Grandmother sat across the table from me,dabbing the tears from her wrinkled cheeks. I didn't know if things would be okay-or if I could even fix this. But I knew that I needed to try,so I extended my hand across the table and held hers."I'll fix this, you don't need to worry!"
