Chapter 1

  POV Victoria

  *school bell rings*

Its the first day of school and I already don't want to be here. I walk the halls with my best friend Mariana.

We have been best friends since grade school. She's a few inches taller than me with shoulder length dark brown hair, and her eyes...well they are this mesmerizing chocolate brown. She moved here from Spain when she was 8, so she still has a tiny accent. I envy her sometimes

when we go anywhere all the guys tend to look at her and her beautiful tan complexion.

As everyone is fleeing to their home rooms, Mariana and I have already decided to skip. We casually walk with the crowd until there are no more students in the hall.

We turn the corner to head out the side door, and I collide into a very tall and lanky person. Upon collision I fall backwards right onto my ass. "Are you kidding me. Can't you look where you are going!" As Mr. Tall and lanky scrambles up his books he starts to apologize, "I'm sooo

sorry, I was running to get to home room..." He looks up and our eyes meet. He reaches his hand out to help me up. "Oh, it's just you." I mumble as I grab his hand, he pulls me up. Mariana rolls her eyes stepping into our awkward silence she says, "So Damian how's it going?" He reply's kindly. "Oh, you know same old same old and you

guys?" Second bell for class rings and Damian collects the rest of his stuff from the floor. He steps around us and starts running again yelling back, "Sorry Victoria, we'll catch up later sometime!"

Mariana and I continue out the side door of the school to go hang out at the café down the street where our other friends are already waiting. We get to the café and get our usual. Sitting down with our friends at our table.

  POV Damian

As I enter home room late, I scurry to my seat and sit down. The teacher starts roll call. He goes down the list calling names and then I hear Victoria's. My head shot up scanning the room for her face, only to notice that she never showed up. I furrow my brow and continue doodling on my notebook. 90 minutes later the bell rings for the next period. I shove out of my seat collecting my books and head out of the room to my next class. In the hall I run into my best friend Greg. I've known Greg since kindergarten. He was the third to mine and Victoria's trio. Greg's a few inches shorter than me but makes up for

that with body mass. I'm 6 foot, but really skinny he's 5'10, but has a little more muscle than me. He has this god-awful copper brown hair cut that he loves so much. I try not to pick on him too much about it.

"Hey white walker have you seen Victoria anywhere? She was supposed to be in my home room but never showed up." As I walk closer to Greg we start walking to our next class. He reply's, "Nah bro I haven't seen her at all today. But hey you know Victoria she's probably off somewhere with Mariana skipping AGAIN. You'd think she would

learn from almost failing grade 8 but I guess not." White walker is a name Greg uses that he heard in his favourite show, but as much as he tells people to call him that it’s only me that does. I look down at the floor as we stopped at Greg’s locker to get his English textbook. He looks over at me, as I have a worried expression on my face. "Hey, she'll probably turn up in her next class don't worry man she'll be fine." "Ya you're probably right let’s head to class before we are late. "Another 90 minutes pass by and now its time for lunch. Greg and I venture to our lockers to grab our bag lunches. We head down to the cafeteria to find somewhere to eat. I scan the crowd of people and find a table. Quickly I weave in and out of people to get to the free table. Greg tosses his tuna sandwich on the table making a disgusted look at it. "Why don't you make your own lunch if you don't like what your mom makes you?" Greg looks up. "Because, I don't want to break her heart she works so hard being a lawyer all day to come home to her two children. She takes pleasure in making us lunches." I choke on my mouth full of pop. "Are you being serious right now. Your mom works all day to come home to you and your little brother with the house a disaster and you two fighting. To have to make you lunch everyday. God if I had to do that, I would have poisoned your food already." Greg cracks a smile. "Kevin and I aren't so bad as sons." I crack up laughing. "Seriously Greg I was just at your house the other day, and you were

about to pile drive Kevin for eating all of the cereal." Greg snorts. "Ahh he had it coming! He always eats the last of everything, not just the cereal. The kids going to be 500 lbs by the time he's our age." Lunch ends, Greg and I finish at our lockers and start to head to History class. As we walk in, to my surprise, I knew the teacher sitting at the

front of the class. I walk up to his desk to greet him. "Hey, Mr. Harrison what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be teaching grade 8 History?" Mr. Harrison looks up as he recognizes my voice. "Ahh a familiar face finally. How are you Mr. Vasco? Where's Miss. LaVine, I

thought you would be dragging her to class with you. She is also taking History this period." I tilt my head confused. "I'm not sure Sir... she was also to be in my home room but never showed. I know she’s here today because I ran into her before home room." Quite literally. The second

bell rings and Mr. Harrison stands to quiet down the class. I grab a seat near the front of the class. History is one of my favorite classes. Just learning how life was before my generation is so intriguing. Another 90 minutes go by but before I could get up to leave Mr. Harrison stops in front of my desk. "Mr. Vasco, I have a favor to ask you?" I give him a nod to show I'm willing. He continues to ask his favor. "Apparently Miss. LaVine has not learned

from her just scraping through grade 8 on bare minimum marks. In high school your grades aren't just on your work but also attendance. Mr. Vasco can you please see to it that Miss. LaVine shows up to her classes. I know she could really excel if she would just put some work

into it and show up for class." I nod again to let him know I understand, and I stand up to leave. Before I walk out the door Mr. Harrison says, "thank you." I lost Greg so now I have to walk to my last class by myself. On my way

there I start thinking about Mr. Harrison's favor. Why do I have to be the one to babysit her and make sure she shows up to class. If she knew he had asked me to do this she would resent us both. I don't even know how I'm going to do this with out her knowing I was asked to do it. This morning was the first kinda conversation we have had since 6th grade when she dropped me as her best friend for Mariana. I wouldn't even know where to find her. The second bell rings and I pick up my pace to get to my last class... P.E.
